Why We Started Kenkou: The Problem With Indian Nutrition and What We Are Doing About It
In a hurry? Here is what this covers:
- The specific problem with Indian nutrition that Kenkou was built to solve
- Why the existing solutions, supplements, health food brands, and generic advice, were not working
- What Kenkou chose to do differently and why those choices were not obvious or easy
- The products that came out of this approach and what makes them different at the ingredient level
- What we are trying to build and why we think it matters beyond the products
Kenkou was not started because there were not enough nutrition products in India. It was started because none of the existing ones were solving the right problem.
The problem we kept seeing
India has a micronutrient deficiency crisis. Over 50 percent of the population is deficient in one or more essential nutrients. Iron deficiency anaemia affects over half of Indian women. Vitamin D deficiency affects over 70 percent of urban adults. B12 deficiency is near-universal among vegetarians. Magnesium is chronically depleted by the stress and refined food consumption that define modern Indian life.
These are not abstract statistics. They are the reason people feel perpetually tired, get ill frequently, struggle to concentrate, and cannot understand why eating reasonably well is not making them feel better. The gap between what Indian bodies need and what Indian diets currently provide is significant, measurable, and growing.
Why the existing solutions were not working
The supplement industry offered synthetic vitamins in capsule form. The bioavailability of most synthetic supplements is significantly lower than food-sourced nutrients. More importantly, nutrients in isolation behave differently from nutrients in food. The food matrix, the combination of fibre, fat, enzymes, and co-factors that surrounds a nutrient in whole food, is what makes absorption efficient. A synthetic iron tablet is not the same thing as iron in rajgeera surrounded by the fibre and Vitamin C that helps the body absorb it.
The health food industry offered products with the aesthetics of wellness and the ingredients of conventional packaged food. Clean packaging, earthy branding, and ingredient lists that did not survive scrutiny. Refined flour with a small percentage of multigrain added. Refined sugar with the word natural in front of it. Protein bars built on maltodextrin with protein powder as an afterthought.
Generic nutrition advice offered population-average recommendations that did not account for the specific deficiency profile of Indian bodies, the specific ingredients available in the Indian pantry, or the specific constraints of Indian cooking and eating patterns.
What we chose to do differently
Start with the Indian pantry. The ingredients that address the most common nutritional gaps in Indian bodies are already in Indian food culture: rajgeera for complete protein and iron, gond for sustained energy and joint support, methi for blood sugar stability and gut health, moringa for iron and Vitamin C together, til for calcium and zinc. These are not exotic imports. They are ingredients that Indian food culture developed over millennia precisely because they work.
Build products that deliver these ingredients in forms that fit into modern Indian life. Not supplements. Not meal replacements. Food. A bite that provides gond and rajgeera and dry fruits in the same combination that traditional ladoos used, without the refined sugar and hydrogenated fat that commercial production introduced. A drink mix that provides moringa and whole grain nutrition in the time it takes to stir a glass of water.
Be completely transparent about what is in them. Every ingredient declared. Every value tested. Nothing hidden behind vague terms or present in token amounts to justify a marketing claim.
What we are building
Products that nourish. A community, through Kenkou Health School, where Indian nutrition is discussed with the rigour and specificity it deserves. And a brand that treats its customers as intelligent people who deserve honest information about what they are eating and why it matters.
The products are at kenkou.in. The community is at Kenkou Health School. We built both because we believe that good nutrition in India requires both good food and good information, and that neither is sufficient without the other.
