The Indian health food market has a sweetener problem. Brands have discovered that replacing sugar with stevia, monk fruit, or FoS (fructooligosaccharides) allows them to market their products as diabetic-friendly, low-sugar, or zero-glycaemic. The claims are not always wrong. But they are rarely the whole story. And the comparison with naturally sweetened whole-food alternatives, like dates and jaggery, is almost never made honestly.

The iron-Vitamin C synergy: what our lab reports show

Kenkou's Nutri Bites (Mixed Seeds Laddu) were independently tested by Equinox Labs, a NABL-accredited laboratory, in July 2025. The results reveal something that is nutritionally significant and, to our knowledge, not claimed by any other Indian snack product with verified data behind it.

The finished product contains 4.73 mg of iron per 100g, sourced naturally from the seed matrix of sesame seeds, pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, and chia seeds. It also contains 12.27 mg of Vitamin C per 100g, present from the combination of seeds in the formulation.

These two values together are not incidental. They are the basis of one of the most well-established absorption synergies in nutrition science.

Non-heme iron, the form of iron found in plant foods, is absorbed at low efficiency on its own: approximately 2 to 20 percent depending on conditions. The primary mechanism for enhancing this absorption is the presence of Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) at the same meal. Vitamin C reduces ferric iron (Fe3+) to ferrous iron (Fe2+), the form that intestinal transport proteins can efficiently absorb. Hallberg and Hulthen (American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2000) demonstrated that consuming Vitamin C alongside non-heme iron can increase its absorption by up to 300 percent. A later study by Lynch (Nutrition Reviews, 2011) confirmed that the enhancement is dose-dependent and most effective when Vitamin C is present in the same food or consumed simultaneously.

In Kenkou Nutri Bites, both the iron and the Vitamin C are present in the same bite. The absorption enhancement happens at the point of digestion, not through any processing or fortification step. This is the food matrix effect working exactly as nutrition science describes it.

The complete mineral profile: what the numbers mean

Beyond iron and Vitamin C, the Equinox Labs reports reveal a mineral density in Nutri Bites that is exceptional for a whole-food Indian snack. All values are per 100g of finished product, tested from a batch manufactured July 2025.

Magnesium: 204.49 mg. The Indian Council of Medical Research recommends 310 to 410 mg of magnesium daily for adults. A 100g serving of Nutri Bites provides approximately half this requirement. Pumpkin seeds are among the richest dietary sources of magnesium available: 30g of pumpkin seeds in the formulation accounts for a significant proportion of this value. Magnesium is required for over 300 enzymatic reactions, including ATP production, muscle function, nerve signalling, and the activation of Vitamin D to its functional form. Chronic magnesium deficiency, which affects the majority of urban Indians, is associated with poor sleep, anxiety, muscle cramps, and fatigue.

Calcium: 217.68 mg. The 30g of sesame seeds in the formulation is the primary calcium contributor: sesame provides approximately 975 mg of calcium per 100g, making it one of the most calcium-dense plant foods available. Calcium from sesame is accompanied by the fat and protein matrix that supports its absorption.

Iron: 4.73 mg. Against an RDA of 17 to 21 mg for Indian women, 4.73 mg per 100g is a meaningful contribution, particularly given the Vitamin C co-presence that enhances its absorption.

Potassium: 739.98 mg per 100g. This is a standout figure. Potassium supports cardiovascular function by counteracting sodium's blood pressure effects, and most Indians consume far less than the recommended 3,500 mg daily. The combination of dates, almonds, and pumpkin seeds in the formulation drives this value.

The fat profile deserves attention: 23.16g of total fat per 100g, of which 10.91g is MUFA and 8.43g is PUFA. Trans fat is below detectable limits at less than 0.10g. This is the fat profile of a product built on nuts and seeds, not refined vegetable oil. The ratio of unsaturated to saturated fat is approximately 5:1, which is consistent with the dietary fat profiles associated with cardiovascular protection in clinical research (Mensink et al., American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, 2003).

Protein: 24.70g per 100g. From cashews, almonds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, and flax seeds. This is a higher protein density than most commercially available Indian snacks and is composed entirely of plant-based whole-food protein rather than isolated protein powder additions.

Alternative sweeteners: what the research actually says

FoS (fructooligosaccharides), stevia, and monk fruit (luo han guo extract) are marketed as the intelligent, health-forward alternatives to sugar for people managing blood sugar or diabetes. The claims behind each deserve careful examination.

FoS is technically a prebiotic fibre, not a sweetener in the conventional sense. It feeds beneficial gut bacteria and has a minimal glycaemic response. At doses used for sweetening (typically 3 to 8g per serving), it is generally well-tolerated, though higher doses cause bloating and digestive discomfort. Its prebiotic benefit is real. However, commercial products using FoS as a sweetener often pair it with other sweeteners or bulking agents, and the label claim of prebiotic benefit can overstate the functional dose present.

Stevia extract (rebaudioside A) has been studied for safety and is generally regarded as safe by WHO and FSSAI at approved levels. Several studies have shown neutral or modestly beneficial effects on blood glucose and insulin response compared to sucrose (Goyal et al., Nutrition Reviews, 2010). However, stevia is rarely used alone in commercial products. Most commercial stevia-sweetened products contain erythritol as a bulking agent. A 2023 study published in Nature Medicine (Hazen et al.) found that high erythritol levels in blood were associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events including heart attack and stroke. The study was observational and the mechanism requires further investigation, but it raised legitimate questions about long-term erythritol consumption at the levels present in heavily sweetened products. This research is ongoing and inconclusive, but the uncertainty is real.

Monk fruit extract (mogroside V) is the least studied of the three in human populations. Animal studies show promising metabolic effects. Human clinical trial data beyond 90 days is limited, and the long-term metabolic consequences of regular consumption remain poorly characterised. The FDA classification as generally recognised as safe applies to short-term use at specified levels. Long-term population-level data does not yet exist.

There is also a more fundamental concern about all alternative sweeteners that is underappreciated in the marketing of diabetic-friendly products. Several studies, including a review by Swithers (Trends in Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2013), have proposed that sweet taste perception, regardless of caloric content, triggers a conditioned insulin response in habituated individuals. The brain anticipates glucose delivery based on the sweet signal and primes the pancreas accordingly. If glucose does not arrive (because the sweetener is non-caloric), the insulin is released into a low-glucose environment, which can paradoxically worsen blood sugar stability over time. This mechanism is debated, not universally accepted, and varies by individual, but it represents a legitimate research concern that is entirely absent from the marketing of alternative-sweetened products.

For people specifically trying to reduce carbohydrate intake for ketogenic or very low carbohydrate dietary goals, alternative sweeteners serve a clear purpose and the available evidence supports their use within that context. This is a legitimate application.

For people managing diabetes or metabolic syndrome, however, alternative sweeteners address the symptom (glycaemic response to sugar) without addressing the cause (insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction). A product sweetened with monk fruit that is still high in refined starch and low in fibre and protein has a lower glycaemic response than its sugar-sweetened equivalent but does not support the metabolic health that should be the actual goal of dietary management for this population.

Why dates and jaggery are a different conversation

The 145g of dates in Kenkou Nutri Bites (dry dates and fresh dates combined, out of 310g total formulation weight) are not a compromise on health goals. They are a considered formulation choice based on what dates contribute alongside their natural sugar content.

Dates provide potassium at approximately 696 mg per 100g, iron at approximately 1.02 mg per 100g, fibre at approximately 8g per 100g, and a range of B vitamins including B3 and B5. The 9.46g of dietary fibre per 100g in the finished product, verified by the Equinox Labs report, significantly moderates the glycaemic impact of the date sugars by slowing their absorption. The glycaemic index of whole dates is approximately 42 to 55 (Al-Farsi and Lee, Comprehensive Reviews in Food Science and Food Safety, 2008), significantly lower than refined sugar at 65 and comparable to or lower than most alternative sweetener bulking agents.

The sugar in Kenkou Nutri Bites is not refined sugar. It is not an alternative sweetener whose long-term effects are unknown. It is the naturally occurring sugar in whole dates, consumed alongside 9.46g of fibre, 204mg of magnesium, 217mg of calcium, 4.73mg of iron, and 12.27mg of Vitamin C per 100g. The complete nutritional context of that sugar is what makes it a different conversation from either refined sugar or synthetic alternatives.

The formulation principle
