The school years between 5 and 12 are a period of steady physical growth, rapid cognitive development, and the formation of eating habits that often persist into adulthood. Yet nutrition for school-age Indian children receives far less attention than infant nutrition, despite its profound importance.

Calcium and Vitamin D support the bone development that is occurring throughout childhood and peaks in density during adolescence. A tiffin that consists primarily of refined carbohydrates, whether white bread sandwiches, plain roti, or packaged biscuits, provides calories without the nutrients that support learning and sustained concentration through the school day.

A nutritionally functional school tiffin includes a protein source: boiled egg, paneer, curd, or dal-based preparation. A complex carbohydrate: ragi roti, whole wheat, or rice with dal. A vegetable or fruit for vitamins and fibre. Water, not juice or flavoured milk. This is not a complicated formula and does not require more time than the current tiffin in most households.

What undermines school-age nutrition most in India

Packaged school snacks and canteen food that is high in refined carbohydrates, sugar, and salt. Replacing home-cooked food with packaged convenience items. Inadequate dal consumption because children prefer plain rice or roti. The normalisation of packaged biscuits and chips as acceptable snacks. These are addressable through household food environment changes that do not require children's cooperation: what is available is what gets eaten.
